Vanderbilt added four coaches to its staff Thursday, including naming former San Francisco 49ers assistant Jason Tarver as the defensive coordinator.
The school also announced the hires of special teams coordinator Shawn Mennenga, wide receivers coach Aaron Moorehead and cornerbacks coach Terrence Brown.
Tarver has 16 years of NFL experience, including the last three with San Francisco. He served as the 49ers’ senior defensive assistant last season and coached the team’s outside linebackers in 2016.
Before rejoining San Francisco’s staff, on which he coached for 10 years, Tarver was the defensive coordinator for the Oakland Raiders from 2012 to 2014.
“Jason is as smart a football coach as I’ve had the chance to be around,” Commodores head coach Derek Mason said. “He makes complex football seem real easy.”
Mennenga also has ample experience in the NFL, spending the last seven seasons as the Cleveland Browns’ special teams assistant coach. The Browns ranked seventh in the NFL in punting average and kickoff coverage and eighth in kickoff return average in 2017.
Moorehead was the wide receivers coach at Texas A&M for the past three seasons, and Brown spent the last three seasons as a defensive graduate assistant for the University of Washington.
